As summer sets in, Calendula and Malva blanket the fields of Southern Italy. Some of our most supportive plants are the ones many walk right over without noticing. Calendula’s resinous flowers provide wonderful support to our tissues– they promote cell repair and growth, are brilliant inflammation modulators, and provide protection against pathogens.  Like the many beautiful plants of the Mallow family, Malva is rich in mucilage, making it a great emollient. Mucilage helps both the plants it’s from, and us, retain water by forming a protective film that covers and fills any cracks in our skin. This gel-like substance is deeply moisturizing, soothing, cooling, and protective. Honey is present as it is in many of my soaps because of its calming, antimicrobial, and humectant actions. When added to cold process soap at trace, honey is able to remain itself (shea butter is another example of this) rather than become a part of the new soap molecule like most of the other ingredients, and in doing so lightly caramelizes during the saponification process, creating a sweet toasty scent. Together, these three are great wound healers–while this is intended for common, daily use–this is also definitely the bar you want to reach for to clean wounds and topical infections. Field Work embodies the gentleness of the shade its flowers seek relief in, as well as the intensity of the sun that brings them to life–a good companion when it's hot and you may find yourself rinsing off more.

To care for soap simply have a space & dish where it can rest & fully dry in between uses. Keep out of the stream of running water when not in use. Can be used directly on body or lathered on hands/ in a cloth.

*Sodium Hydroxide, otherwise known as Lye, is an ingredient essential in hard soap making which chemically causes saponification. It completely transforms in the process and no lye remains in the fully cured soap bar.
