Caffè Leccese is inspired by the drink of the same name that comes from Lecce in Puglia. Caffè Leccese is made with ice, espresso, and sweetened almond milk, or sometimes with unsweetened almond milk, or alternatively an almond syrup. Back in the day this would have been ordered at Caffè in ghiacco con latte di mandorla but became so popular it earned a name after its birthplace. I made this soap with homemade almond milk, espresso, and honey as the sweet element for its skin supporting nature. Almond milk is wonderful used topically—soothing, moisturizing, nourishing. Coffea canephora, often called Robusta, is utilized in used in good espresso’s which lends the quintessential strength, finish, and ‘crema’. Coming from central and western sub-Saharan Africa, this bean is distinctively earthy. It has less acidity, more bitterness, and more than double the caffeine and antioxidant content of Arabica beans. Honey is present as it is in many of my soaps because of its calming, antimicrobial, and humectant actions. When added to cold process soap at trace, honey is able to remain itself (shea butter is another example of this) rather than become a part of the new soap molecule like most of the other ingredients, and in doing so lightly caramelizes during the saponification process, creating a sweet toasty scent. This bar is creamy, revitalizing, and soothing—reminiscent of a delicious pick me up on a hot afternoon.

To care for soap simply have a space & dish where it can rest & fully dry in between uses. Keep out of the stream of running water when not in use. Can be used directly on body or lathered on hands/ in a cloth.

*Sodium Hydroxide, otherwise known as Lye, is an ingredient essential in hard soap making which chemically causes saponification. It completely transforms in the process and no lye remains in the fully cured soap bar.
